Thanks to Mely for these Puto Molds!

I came home very tired from work today, and I still have to go to work early tomorrow morning, then I have the weekend off, and I will be able to update my blog and do some bloghopping.
Mely had told me about her sending these puto molds to me and I have been waiting excitingly for them.
I finally got them today! They were like mini muffin cups! But the good thing about these (in contrast to muffin cups) is that they do not have ridges, so clean up (and brushing with butter) will be much easier!

Thanks, Mely!!! Like you said, I will put these puto molds to good use...you can count on me for that!

Mely is a very good cook and has got lots of excellent recipes in her food blog.

For those who might be interested to purchase puto molds, the tartlet pans on the right will probably do (they are like shorter versions of muffin cups without the ridges).

  5. Anonymous,
Those were tin cups. I asked Mely where she got those and she said it was a gift to her from a friend in Cali (she received 100 of each tin and plastic). After I asked her where she got those, that's when she thought of giving me half of what she has. So I cannot really answer your question.

    TN,
Sorry I don't know where to get them except maybe if you go home to the Philippines. These are the bite-size cups, about 1 inch diameter at the bottom.

  6. I want those too! Where in Cali did she find them? I checked Tatak Pinoy's website (Los Angeles) I did not see any. I had asked my friend in Montalban to buy me some. She already got them but I told her to just hold on until she comes back to visit us. That will be in Dec. 2009. However, she said it is so cheap!

  7. Ebie,
Then you will just have to be patient and wait, haha! I hope they get to you soon enough so you can use them for Christmas. I am guessing the Cali friend also got them from the Philippines.

    hi manang,
i just pour the puto batter into greased small pyrex bowls ( 1/2 cup cap. ) and microwave for 5 mins.

  10. Hi philly-pinoy,
Hey, that's a good idea! Is that 5 minutes for a whole batch?
Reminds me of how some people make their individual chocolate cakes by microwaving.

  11. Would metal portion cups work? I've seen these in Walmart. When I saw these molds instantly thought of them. Not exactly same size, by your description, I think they're a little bigger. Hmmm, maybe the restaurant supply store would have different sizes. Any thoughts on this?

  12. Hi Anonymous,
I think I know what you are talking about. Just when Mely told me she was gonna give these to me, I had bought several (I hoarded) of those mini metal cups (I think they are for condiments, best for dipping, like lobsters into melted butter). These molds are much smaller (bite-size puto). But I was thinking those metall cups from walmart would be very good size.

    2. Quite overpriced...cheap plastic (questionable if food grade) at about $0.80 cents a piece. You can get food grade 4-oz food-grade plastic containers with lids at usplastic.com for $0.43 cents/pc (cheaper if by the bulk).

  20. are these plastic molds used for condiments? they won't melt when used for steaming puto cheese? appreciate your reply....thanks a lot!

  21. Hi Anonymous,
These plastic molds are real puto molds (however, they were sent to me as a gift from a co-food blogger, MaMely of PinoyAmericanRecipes.com). And I have used them for the rice puto post that I have. They did not melt.

  22. The only problem with using plastic molds like there is there is a high chance of probability that they are not contaminant free, BPA and the like. Considering you are steaming the puto, you are only increasing the chance of releasing the compounds from the plastic. I would add only buy products which state they are BPA free and only use plastic products for which they are intended. Those metal ones look real nice. The plastic ones are very suspect and would guarantee BPA and possibly lead in plastics when made and who knows what else.

    1. That is so true...BPA issues actually have made me leery of even tomato sauce and tomato paste (high-acidity canned goods).

BPA concerns also has me preferring to use silicone molds with paper liners for purposes such as this.
